Decreasing the number of road accidents is among the main priorities of car manufacturers. While consumers primarily look for characteristics such as comfort and fuel efficiency, car makers are quite particular about providing safety.

This leads us to the topic of ADAS a.k.a the advanced driver-assistance systems. These systems were created as a result of the alarming rate of road accidents in the USA, Europe, and UK. ADAS helps in two main areas:

  • Road safety
  • Car safety

While the two are interconnected, the road safety aspect might be the more important one because it concerns the drivers of other vehicles and pedestrians. All of this is achieved because the system reduces the possibility of a human error.

Studies and statistics have shown that most road accidents happen due to human error. While it is understood that machinery cannot fully substitute the human role, it can at least mitigate the detrimental effects of human errors.

In that sense, ADAS can either enhance some of the car’s safety features or can take full control over the vehicle in some situations. It is quite obvious that such an addition is crucial to any vehicle. Many older cars do not have ADAS. In that sense, when a person is out there seeking to buy a used vehicle, they would have to see how old the car is. The older the vehicle, the fewer safeguards it would have.

Let’s list a few characteristics

It would be impossible for us to list and explain all the features that ADAS has because there are more than a dozen of them. However, we will highlight a few and explain their purpose. What is good about ADAS is that it doesn’t differentiate between left and right lane driving. This means that cars for sale in the UK can also be fully compatible with ADAS.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – this feature is an enhancement of the typical cruise control. It adjusts the speed of the car to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles on the road.
  • Pedestrian Protection – this component of ADAS uses AI to recognize bicycles and pedestrians.
  • Blind spot monitor – this is a sensor which detects cars or pedestrians that the driver cannot see. The alert can be vibrating or audible.
  • Lane Centering  - this is a pretty self-explanatory one. It helps the driver keep a stable vehicle in the center of the lane.
