Modern alloy wheels or traditional steel wheels - which is better? Hertz Rent2Buy UK examines both options, delving into one of the biggest trends in car sales.

Take a stroll around any car sales garage that sells brand new vehicles, and you’d be hard pushed to find anything even remotely resembling the old style of the steel wheel. Modern alloys have fast become the norm in car wheels; the latest ‘must have’ accessory. But are alloy wheels really worth the extra money?

It is undeniable that alloy wheels are attractive, and they certainly have other benefits, too. They are lighter than steel wheels, alloy wheels not only improve acceleration but also boost precision. They fare well in extreme and varied driving conditions, which is why alloy wheels are extremely popular in Glasgow and other parts of Scotland with the rugged and sometimes unpredictable terrain.

However, it can be challenging to find alloy wheels in a used car sales garage, especially one that specialises in older or more dated vehicles. Is this a deal breaker? No way! While alloy wheels are good, steel wheels can hold their own. In fact, there are some areas where steel wheels outperform their more contemporary counterparts! Steel wheels are by far the more cost-effective solution, and if things go wrong, they are often much more affordable to repair or replace than alloys, too.

Of course, the alloy has the added advantage of style and appearance, with great aesthetics that allow for some degree of customisation. Corrosion of alloy also tends to be slightly less noticeable. In general, it has to be said that alloy wheels are, technically, better than steel. However, if we go back to the original question of ‘are alloy wheels worth it?’ well, we’re afraid that’s something that only you can answer!

What we can say is that alloy wheels are great, but they’re not necessary. In fact, steel wheels will do the job just fine. So if you are in the market for a used car, don’t be deterred by steel. Instead, embrace it!
