Autonomous driving – why we are still a long way away

More or less everybody is excited about the time when fully autonomous cars will be available for the mass consumer! They promise less stress, safety, a lower number of accidents and somewhat a carefree trip. Unfortunately, the industry has a long way to go before we can enjoy this utopia. And the reasons for that are fairly solid.

Prices, prices and... prices

Let's be honest. The production of a trustworthy fully autonomous vehicle is expensive. Estimations predict some 10-million self-driving cars on the streets by 2020. But it is still not even the number of a metropolis. As with any technology, a huge amount of data and endless tests are required to make a reliable autonomous system. Tests and data cost money. Technology is developing, and manufacturing materials are improving, and the prices are going down. But around 2025 it will still cost $7,000 to $10, 000 to have those upgrades in your car. A figure too high for the masses. Plus, all the infrastructure and people required to live the futuristic vision.

Legislations and Legal Ramifications

Real-time tests require not only investments but legal permissions too. Then questions arise. If an accident between self-driven and human-driven cars occurs, who takes the responsibility? Could a computer account for the million possible situations on the road? Many legal questions will need to be answered. National and international laws will have to be adjusted. A huge effort that makes the time of driverless vehicles boom uncertain.

Safety

Few frustrating accidents with autonomous cars already occurred. So, flooding the car market with them is still a fantasy. Earning the trust of people will come step by step, no matter the excitement. Of course, huge investments are made, and more countries are opening to experiments. And the consumer is getting all the advantages of developing technologies. But except for their curiosity, people are not ready to trust autonomous vehicles with their life.

While waiting for this utopia to come, the cars for sale in the UK have a decent flow. You can find a wide range of used cars for sale in the UK on Hertz Rent2Buy UK website.
