Buying a car is a fun but important task. Getting it right isn’t always easy, and the opposite could mean spending a great deal of money fixing an unreliable car. Or being unhappy with your choice. But make the right choice you will have years of motoring happiness with a fun and enjoyable car.

Before you even decide on the make or model of car you want, you first need to decide, used or new.

Used Cars

The range of used cars for sale in the UK is staggering, with Autotrader.co.uk advertising over 400,000 used vehicles at any given time. And the difference between them is even bigger. The term “used car” covers anything from a £99 non-starter for parts, right up to a Ferrari in excess of a million pounds. So even within the used market, you need to work out what area of the market you are in. Budget will help you decide that.

The major advantage of buying a used car is relatively simple; vehicle depreciation, or in layman’s terms, price. It is commonly known that the moment a vehicle leaves the forecourt for the first time, the depreciation on its value has a major impact. So, for many people the value for money in a used car is far higher. As you can see on many of the automotive marketplaces online, a used car is not normally a wreck. There are thousands of cars on the market that are more or less like new, but with a significantly lower price tag. There are also scores of well-loved and well-serviced used cars to choose from. Hertz Rent2Buy boasts a fleet of such cars.

Let the buyer beware though. Make sure you trust your instinct when dealing with a seller. While most are good professional people, you don’t want to be sold a lemon by the stereo-typical used car salesman!

New Cars

A new car however, has the gloss and the shine of all things new. It even has its own smell. For some, the allure of the latest model and being one of the first to drive it around our roads is a status issue. For others, it is the ability to choose the options and specifications of a new car. It gives them the freedom to choose the extras they want and then order the car based on their own needs and desires. Another significant reason for going for a new car is the warranty. Many brands offer years of servicing for free and this can be very attractive.

However, all of this lovely new shininess comes at a cost. New cars not only cost more than used, but they also lost a significant %n of their value the minute you drive out of the forecourt.
