Just as advanced technologies are driving every element of modern life, so the evolution of technology in cars is hastening.

There is some debate surrounding where the possibilities for in car technology lie. Connected cars undoubtedly are the future, but what does that mean for the average driver, and how will these drift down into used markets?

IT giants are driving the trends. Dealer Refresh explains: ‘Today, Apple announced CarPlay, bringing its brand new in-car infotainment system to Honda, Mercedes, Volvo, Hyundai and Jaguar as well as a dozen committed partnerships from some of the largest manufactures in the automotive sphere.

‘Google recently announced partnerships with GM, Audi, and Hyundai. Ford’s relationship with Microsoft revs up the continued adaptation of in-car apps with Microsoft’s SYNC system now in over 8 million vehicles.’

That’s not all that’s happening. Technology can do so much. Dealer Refresh provides an example. A woman, ‘Is alerted through her car that the nearby dealership has delivered an oil change special. She engages with the coupon in her car, sees an opening at 2pm, schedules the appointment, and receives directions to the dealer.

‘This is targeted messaging delivered at the moment of decision! Location Targeting, through an app, connected with the car.’

It is probably not going to be long before this kind of experience is commonplace amongst used car drivers and it all bodes well for the overall future of motoring and driver satisfaction.

When it comes to choice, though, there is going to be something of a dividing line. Obviously manufacturers are likely to tie in their vehicles with certain tech providers, in this instance largely Apple or Google, Android or iPhone.

The choice will probably come down to which mobile devices you prefer in your life, but of course if your preferred used manufacturer has sided with the opposition then you are going to face dilemma. Namely whether to alter your used car choice to suit the technology you want to bring into it, or whether to drive ‘unconnected’.

It may not sound like a big deal now, but as more and more of the world and its essential experiences and tools move online, not being in the right vehicle, that fits in correctly with your mobile tech, will impact ever more negatively on your life.
