One of the most exciting trends in today’s automotive world surrounds new in-car technologies and how they are evolving and defining new ways we will all live and drive.

Among more obvious ways this will happen is the transference of apps into the driving seat. Music streaming service Pandora can now be voice activated by drivers as they navigate motorways and A roads. It’s logical to assume that the line between the smart phone and the dashboard is increasingly going to blur.

As time passes, it may also be that automotive manufacturers have to offer versions of cars to suit whichever operating systems drivers prefer. So if you use Apple products, like the iPhone, then it may be that in a few years you will specify the computer system within your vehicle needs to work in sync with that specific technology provider.

Increasingly, firms are getting caught up in the race to bring such new technologies to life. Google is teaming up with Audi, GM and Honda, to develop the new ‘Open Automotive Intelligence’. But its competitor, Microsoft, is working on ‘Embedded Automotive Software’ with KIA and Ford.

‘Windows Embedded Automotive 7 provides resources that help automobile manufacturers increase customer loyalty and provide new services, such as enabling software updates that extend a vehicle’s value and lifespan.’ explains Microsoft.

And, ‘With industry leading development tools such as Visual Studio, Expression Blend and XAML,’ Microsoft argues manufacturers, ‘Can build a development platform that fuels your company’s ability to innovate and create connected car solutions.’

What seems certain is that such innovative new horizons are upon us, and that IT, interactive systems and a new dawn of truly computer driven motoring are upon us. Such technologies will quickly float down into used markets as demand speeds the development of futuristic solutions. The extent to how interactive your next used car is will largely be down to you.
