The pre-owned vehicle market today offers so many options that making a choice can prove to be quite difficult. Which brand are you interested in, or which model? Does any brand stand out in the pre-owned vehicle market? Let’s look at the facts.

Any vehicle loses value quickly, and most especially if they are new. It is a fact that certain brands age much better than others. For example, the Mini Cooper holds around sixty-seven percent of its value even after three years.

The depreciation of a vehicle may have a major impact on which brand and make is the best choice for you. In general, vehicle brands that are known to be sturdy and strong hold their value much better than more flimsy makes. Of course there are some brands that will always hold their value; high end luxury types for instance.

Further to this, a ‘Reliability Index’ was created this year by Warranty Direct, in which brands and models were tested for their dependability. The parameters on which the vehicles were judged included the number of times they failed, the average amount of time spent off road, and the cost of repairs. This was used in conjunction with the average age and mileage of the vehicles to arrive at the index. During the testing a number of significant results were found, which should help us to determine which brands are the most reliable.

The trend that seems to appear is that high end vehicles do not always fare as well as more moderate brands. This can be explained by the high cost of repair vehicles from Porsche or Jaguar. So, this must mean that if you have the money to keep such vehicles in good health, then they can be worthwhile. It is also worth noting, that amongst these brands, the BMW placed much higher. In fact, the BMW Z3 ranked at thirteen in the UK’s Car Model Reliability Report.

If we look at the other vehicles tested, brands such as Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and Nissan fared better. Mitsubishi was placed joint sixth, and has actually been named as the most reliable brand in the UK. Nissan placed similarly well, at ninth in the tables. The added benefits of these brands is that the upkeep, fuel, and repair costs are much less. Finally, the high places on the Index show that these vehicles are less likely to break down or have significant problems.

However, there are no scientific tests that can beat hands on experience, when looking for a used vehicle. Some companies, such as Hertz, even allow you to test drive a used vehicle for a week to ensure that it is the right fit. The cost of this rental would be taken out of the vehicle’s price if you decided to buy. The ability to really try a vehicle in this manner is incredible, and could really help you to determine the make and model that is right for you.

So, in conclusion; is there any one brand that is better than its competitors? It’s hard to say. Whilst depreciation and tests such as the Reliability Index help us to shed some light, it is difficult to form firm deductions from them. It does seem that, as long as you are careful, and make sure that you purchase a vehicle that is in good health, and from a brand that is trustworthy, your chances of going wrong decreases significantly. Depreciation is another matter. It really depends on whether you wish to retain a vehicle for a substantial amount of time, or to sell it on fairly soon. In the latter case, of course, you must make sure you purchase a vehicle that retains value. In the former, it is still important, but slightly less so.
