Newness, cars, fashion and status have long been interlinked, but the trends may be changing. Today, in western countries, a new car may not quite have the kudos it once did. Many buyers are thinking with their wallets. Many more are thinking environmentally.

Combined, these elements make a new car something less of a fashion statement than before. Owners today appreciate value, sustainability and on-road cost just as much as something new and shiny.

Used cars are cheaper, and that can make them cooler. However, this is by no means the case worldwide. In growing, developing economies, the status that a new car imparts appears to lend its user some appeal. In places like China, the new car market is thriving. The concept that a new car implies success and wealth remains a part of the popular mindset, and as such these are the areas where manufacturers are increasingly targeting the new market. Mind you, motor trend reckons that many ‘status’ cars are today available at bargain prices. It lists Maseratis and BMW 8 Series, saying these iconic vehicles are available in the second hand market at previously unforeseen prices.

"A pre-owned Range Rover in good condition is as convincing as a new model.” it says, adding, “If you want to make that good first impression on the cheap, we found solid status-symbol cars you can find for a fraction of the original sticker." Of course, whether or not this is true depends on the person you are trying to impress, but certainly the demographics are changing.

A new car is no longer the complete status symbol it once was in developed countries, simply because more people can now afford one. Some surveys argue that women remain impressed by the cost of a car, but there seem to be an equal number that report other findings. For other people, a car is an extension of their personal brand.

No matter what though, there is a huge choice on the used market. It is always worth consideration for anyone, of any status, in search of a motor.
