Ensuring safety while you and your pet travel in your car is crucial. How do you do it?

To start with, acclimatise your pet to the car. It is less likely to panic or bark, become agitated and will generally be a safer road companion.

Equally, don’t let your pets hang their heads out of the window. This tip is particularly relevant to dogs. It might seem like fun, but if they are struck by a passing object, that could quickly turn to a drive to the vets.

Take lots of food and water for your pet. To a pet, the interior of a car is an unfamiliar, initially frightening environment. Relaxing them and keeping them well fed and watered in this way will help them sleep and keep still.

You may keep your dog or cat inside their carrier in the car. They are comfortable there and are used to it. One place they should never be is unrestrained in the front seat. There is no predicting what they might do or how they might react in this situation.

Obviously, you should never leave any pet inside a locked vehicle in the sun. Make sure your pet has a microchip for ID if they should manage to escape the car.

Consider fitting a dog guard in the car. This creates a self-contained space for your pet; they can’t escape and whilst it might not seem kind, it’s a certain way to keep them safe.

Don’t ever let your pet out from the side of the car facing into the traffic. They could easily run out and be injured, it’s far safer to coax them down onto the pavement. Keep a tight hold of them as soon as you get out.

In addition, there are all kinds of websites like Pet Auto Safety, which sell a variety of safety kits for pets.

Ultimately, being sensible and aware is also your best ally in this battle. Follow your common sense and you and your pet should have many happy travels.
