The UK road network is widely known as one that is badly in need of better maintenance, and the main problem is potholes. Although not exclusively a UK problem, due to lack of funding, potholes are becoming a major issue for UK motorists. According to the RAC website, potholes are caused mainly in the winter time when the moisture freezes in surface cracks and it expands.

These “craters” on the surface of the road can cause a lot of problems for motorists and cyclists alike. The Potholes.co.uk website reports that if adequate funding was available to fix the roads, it would still take between 12 and 14 years to get the roads repaired. And the news just gets worse. According to the RTSA, councils across England could lose a further £3.3billion in funding in 2016/17.

However, the news is not all bad. While driving over a pothole can damage your car in a multitude of ways, there is compensation if you need to claim. The Money Saving Expert website offers a guide on how to make a claim, generally to a local authority, and over £30m has been paid out in compensation for damage to UK vehicles.

Direct damage aside, potholes can contribute to the 10% of all road accidents which are not caused by human error. This plague of potholes is a relatively recent problem brought about by a number of factors. The number of harsh winters the UK has seen over the last 5 or 6 years is a concerning one.

Those in the motoring trade, including the team at Hertz Rent2Buy, are acutely aware of the problem and of the potential for damage to cars. The issue needs to be addressed immediately, before it continues for another 20 years and we have no roads left. So with winter knocking on the door of the UK and the potential of the cold Pacific and a strong El Nino bringing possible snowier conditions than last year, now is the time to keep your eyes open, your cars well maintained and downloading the claim guide!
