With the availability of so many cars in the market, it could get difficult to decide on the best one for your family. Which one to go for - the good old hatchback that used to be the first choice for most families or the stylish SUV that now offers as much space and safety? How do you decide? We’re here to help you out!

We present you with a comparison between the two with which you can judge, whether you should go for a hatchback car or an SUV:

1. Safety
Knowing that everyone will be safe if you’re in an accident is a very import factor when choosing a family car. The public perception is that SUVs are much safer than other types of vehicle. While, on the whole, SUVs do tend to be relatively safe – especially in head-on collisions – the safest car in the market is actually a hatchback. But it more depends on what model you’re looking at.

2. Space
Boot space is typically larger in SUVs than hatchbacks, often proving to be more flexible in terms of seat folding permutations, as well as being able to carry taller loads. That said, a conventional mid-sized hatchback would carry even more cargo and the loading lip of an SUV tends to be significantly higher, too.

3. Looks
SUVs steal the show here. But this is entirely down to an individual’s taste and choice. In recent years, SUVs have become much more stylish. But hatchbacks aren’t quite far behind with manufacturers offering a plenty in personalising options.

4. Running Costs
Traditionally, hatchbacks have definitely been the cheaper option between the two. But with the introduction of Mitsubishi Outlander, the game is fast taking a turn. Yet, you will be paying low road taxes with a hatchback than with an SUV, thus, giving it an edge in the matter of running costs.

5. Feasibility
An SUV is bulkier when it comes to size, making it difficult to park in small spaces and drive around a busy town. On the other hand, a hatchback is compact, which makes driving in busy areas easier, yet it isn’t small enough to make you feel unsafe.

It all comes down to your personal choice. Choose whichever suits your requirements perfectly. And don’t forget, if you’re looking for a cheaper option, hatchback used cars are great!
