Getting your first car is an exciting time. However, for parents, it can also be a period of intense nerves. No matter how comprehensive today’s driving tests may be, there’s little that can compete with experience when it comes to navigating UK roads safely.

For that reason, it’s essential for every parent to spend some time offering their experience to teenagers, to keep them safe on the road and to keep their cars in good condition too.

Every experienced driver out there knows that sometimes, you can just tell when another car is going to pull out without looking. Equally, a certain sense advises you when a car ahead is going to brake late.

We think this is down to intuition, but it’s actually experience. Older brains have years’ worth of data on driving to fall back on, all stored away in our minds. When we see other drivers behaving in a certain way, our brains check back over similar experiences, and relate what we are seeing to potential risk.

That’s what gives the experienced driver the ability to judge when traffic up the motorway is going to bunch together, or when the car ahead of you is about to swerve dangerously.

But for younger drivers, this experience isn’t yet there.

Therefore, the best tips for the teenage driver are to simply go out driving with them. When doing so, start to teach them how to look out for concerning behaviour from other drivers.

Explain to them that when pedestrians stand chatting by zebra crossings, they might just suddenly walk into the road without looking.

When approaching junctions, don’t drive straight towards traffic lights and get caught in yellow hatched areas, blocking the flow of other traffic when lights change. Rather, look ahead and judge whether the space will be there.

With used car sales, you use experience to pick the right motor. It’s the same with driving; experience counts.

At Hertz Rent2Buy, we have vast experience of used car prices, which we are happy to share with our customers. In the same way, we suggest that every experienced driver should be happy to put their knowledge out there in the most useful way for teenagers too.
