The days of picking up the Autotrader catalogue and flicking through for your next vehicle are over. In 2013 Autotrader had the insight and forethought to cancel the printed copy of their catalogue which ran for 36years. Nowadays, the internet is brimming with offers of used cars for sale, from a multitude of online marketplaces like: Autotrader, Motors, eBay, and Sun Motors. And if you want to know more about what to buy, WhatCar, PistonHeads, Parkers Guide, AutoCar, Honest John, WhichCar, are all there to offer advice!

Typically we spend about 3 months researching online for our next car purchase. And what an easy way to take the stress out of buying, when you can do most of the research before even stepping your accelerator foot down on a pedal! So what is the best way to shop online for a used car?

Below are a few useful things the team at Hertz Rent2Buy thinks you should remember when looking online for second-hand cars.

1. Know your budget! It’s too easy to be seduced by the heated leather seats on a pre-winter purchase, or the alloy wheels on the Ecosport even though you were looking at the Fiesta Zetec. So know your budget and understand what items on a car are most important to you. You don’t need to know how much a car costs before you know what your personal finances will allow. Boring but true.

2. Reliable online advice is often the next best place to research. The Honest John and WhatCar sites offer independent review full of unbiased information about important car buying issues, for example, true MPG, to help you work out the real running costs of different makes and models. Or whether diesel or petrol would be best, and which manufacturers do each better.

3. Don’t forget to research the additional car costs, eg. Insurance, Finance, Extended Warranty. At Hertz we have the balance of the Manufacturer’s warranty still available on our vehicles as they are so young. Something which makes a nearly new car purchase all that more attractive!

So before you even take the plunge in going to see a car, set yourself up by good research and planning online before making the big plunge to start visiting vehicles!

1. Once the research is done you need to start looking for ‘the’ car. All the sites listed in the paragraphs above are a good start, but it doesn’t mean you will always find your car on them. You might have a favourite dealership road, or maybe you have a friend at the work who is a real petrol head and can give you a good tip on who or where to buy from.

2. A referral is always a really good idea and remember to keep an open mind. Typical car buying situations are a thing of the past. I mean, did you know you could buy a car from Hertz?

3. And finally, when you do get behind the wheel of a potential purchase, make sure you get a decent test drive. Hertz has made it their business to give good peace of mind when selling its cars to consumers.
